About Stewart

Stewart took his first photographs in elementary school, using a Kodak World’s Fair Brownie camera, given to him by his father. For his bar mitzvah, his dad got him his first set of developing equipment. He shot everything in his Long Island neighborhood – trees, clouds, friends, family and pets; developing the negatives in the laundry room and making prints in the cedar closet. For the last 45 years, he’s continued doing just that; albeit with better equipment. As a professional photographer, Stewart has photographed Hollywood, celebrities, New York street people, Vermont country roads and England’s city streets while continuing to process film and print photographs.

Stewart got his professional darkroom start 40 years ago in New York City, learning to make custom black and white edition prints for commercial and fine art photographers. Today he continues this tradition as an artist serving artists.

He attended the School of Visual Arts in New York, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. Stewart worked in several labs in New York City, primarily learning custom printing from Chuck Kelton of Kelton Labs.

Currently, Stewart lives and works in Providence RI, where he teaches printing at the arts collective AS220, runs a custom black and white printing business, judges at competitive barbecue events, has a victory vegetable garden at home and does various commercial assignments; his favorites being event and portrait photography.
